Our speaker at Kiwanis today was Carolyn Thompson from Tri-Coastal Community Outreach.
Their organization promotes helping children in several different forms. At Christmas about 300 - 350 children are provided with tokens or artificial money. When they come to the center they are told that they must "pay" for their gifts with the tokens, but that they get to choose the gifts they want. This teaches them that toys cost money and that they must select the things they want in life. Tri-Coastal also rewards children graduating from high school. While many scholarships and grants are available for tuition, they need items for their dorm rooms like sheets, towels, desk lamp, etc. The child is given those items and then they are required to donate 20 hours of community service to their town to pay for them. A genuinely good application of life lessons for our future citizens. It was also announced that our chapter's golf team had a good outcome Friday. We moved up from 18th to 8th in the competition over last year.
