At our Kiwanis lunch today, we welcomed speaker Ina Davis, originally from Prattville, Alabama. Ina has led a quite interesting life having married her childhood sweetheart who was in the Coastguard, During World War II they lived in Charleston, SC. and Panama City Florida. Right after the war they settled in Chickasaw and her husband worked at International Paper Co. Ina worked as a disc jockey for WPRN-AM radio and had her own country music program As the 60's came about, the station was encouraged to participate in diversity so they hired the janitor as part of their programming. Quite some interesting stories about the era.

Last night we attended the Mobile Symphony Orchestra appearing at the Saenger Theatre. Dvorak moved to New York at the turn of the century and wrote the New World Symphony #9. A great deal of it was based on Longfellows poem: Hiawatha. The first half of the program was narrated by three gentlemen explaining the scope and unfolding of the symphony. One of these narrators was none other than Charlie Smoke from the Mobile Arts Council, who has spoken to the Chickasaw Chamber of Commerce. Well known music made better by a stunning orchestra and terrific narriation.

Thursday the Chamber of Commerce met featuring speakers Regina Malisham from the IRS and Paul Giardina from The Ronald McDonald House. Paul passed out cardboard "house shaped" boxes for everyone to collect "pop-tops" from soda cans to help the cause. A tasty lunch of soups and salad was provided by Dr. Ervin and Cecilia Ann Dailey.

On Saturday January 14, The Kiwanis held their annual Disc Golf Tournament.
We had over ninety folks sign up to play, down a little from last year. As for myself, I helped man the kitchen to sell sausage dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks. As usual, noon time brought throngs of hungry people to the counter. Whether you are proficient at "disc golf" or just a amateur "newbie", getting out in the brisk sunshine is good for the soul. The Mobile County Republican Executive Committee met last night for dinner and "greet the candidates" at Westminster Methodist Church. I had the opportunity to speak with many of them including Ben Brooks, Charles Graddick and Don Davis. We voted a straw poll on the presidential candidate and Mitt Romney came in first. Several awards were given out by our leader, Terry Lathan and we paid dues for another year.

Had our Knights of Columbus meeting this morning then this evening Deb and I attended the Go-Daddy Bowl at Ladd-Pebbles Stadium. We had the opportunity to hang out at the Greers tent where barbeque and wings were the treat of the evening. Spoke with Dr Naman and his wife before going in for the kick-off. Northern Illinois was playing Arkansas State ad the teams seemed to be well matched.

Last night our good friend invited us to the Players press dinner for the Go Daddy Bowl featuring Northern Illinois of the Mid American Conference VS. Arkansas from the Sun Belt Conference. Good entertainment as well as two very hungry teams provided a football oriented evening. The food was great and we got a chance to speak with some polite, and very well trained atheletes.

New Years Eve the St. Thomas Seniors gathered in the Sullivan Center for our New Years pizza and wine party. There was dancing, a few drinks and lots of good conversation. Some discussion of plans for this coming year were discussed.

Tonight was the Port Of Mobile Christmas Party at the International Trade Center. These folks do know how to do a social function. Lots of carved roast beef, big yummy shrimp and great sushi. Had a chance to say hello to Rep. Randy Davis and many other important Mobilians. We settled down in the bar for a few glasses of wine.

At Kiwanis today we presented our quarterly Police Award to Sgt. Chuck Richardson, an outstanding member of the Chickasaw Police Dept. The chief, Mike Reynolds was there to make the presentation, lauding officer Richardson for the outstanding work he has done. We will meet again on January 9, 2012 after the Christmas Holidays

Sunday afternoon the Knights and Ladies met at Pintolis Restaurant in Satsuma for our Christmas Party. We donated what would have been our "dirty Santa" Christmas gift in cash to the St. Vincent De Paul Society and presented Father Saucier with a gift comforter to use during the upcoming Alabama/LSU football game. Food and fellowship were great and we celebrated Evelyn Kilpatricks birthday.

Yes, it's the world famous Chickasaw Parade this afternoon. While Mayor Byron Pittman led the parade in his newly acquired 1948 Fire Truck. our cameras captured many floats and vehicles. The St Thomas Knights Of Columbus were featured heavily in the event with one truck, two vehicles and a motorcycle. Tim Creamer pulled a float, while Murray Adams and his wife,

drove a Mazda Miata with me and Charles Czajkowski up ahead in my Miata,

and Paul and Tracie LaPiane on his motorcycle. Also pictured are Councilman Adam Bourne and his wife, Jenny, who believe it or not, were in another Miata.

Thursday December 8, was the Womans Club Banquet held at the Civic Center. A wonderful dinner of Roast Beef, Ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, many different salads and a plethera of desserts, along with asuccessful year, helped round-out the evening. "Dirty Santa" was played after the meal with Deborah Hayward playing the host. The head Table consisted of John and Marsha Hattenstein (Club Secretary), Jerry and Barbara Pulliam (Club President) and Tom and Deborah Hayward (CLub Vice President).

Today at Kiwanis Lunch we donated some funds to worthwhile projects. To CASA (court appointed special advocates) we gave $100. Epilepsy Foundation got $50. And the big winner was the 4H gang who received $200. (Lisa Brasellton spoke on behalf of the Chickasaw group whose 14 year son is a member) We are delighted to help groups who benefit our City.

At 6:30 PM hundreds gathered in the City Park at Grand and Lee to witness the lighting of the great tree. Santa was there with his sled and christmas songs were sung. I had the chance to see Mayor Pittmans "new" 1948 Fire Engine, a pumper with 1000 gallons of water in its tank. The Mayor said " I've always wanted to personally own a fire engine and now this rascal is mine." His wife Kelly isn't saying much about it, but Byron says "it'll grow on her."

What a great toy!

Tim Creamer, who works at the Association and Cliff Barros were there to receive it with our best wishes. The KOC is a charitable organization affiliated with the Catholic Church.

Today at our Kiwanis lunch we welcomed Elizabeth Walter and Brenda Wallace from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for abused and neglected children. The program has 40 CASA volunteers who handle up to 3 cases per year. Each case requires a great deal of research and visitation with the parents and even testifying in court.It is an independently funded organization with donations coming from grants, clubs and individuals. Our daughter Courtney and child, Debbie Jo arive from Atlanta to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday with us. Gandma ("Mimi") Deb and Debbie Jo set about making a pumpkin pie for the occassion. Stuart has remained in Atlanta to look after his father who suffered a stroke last week.

At Kiwanis lunch, our president was out of town so yours truly took over the helm temporarily. Our featured speaker was Christina Gomez, lead regional director for the ELIMINATE campaign. In case you have forgotten, Eliminate is a 110 million dollar program in partnership with UNICEF to rid the world of
tenanus poisoning death by expectant mothers children. One in Nine pregnancies result in this painful death to their offspring. It is concracted
through spores in the ground making it suseptible to many women in third
world contries. Three simplre injections costing only $1.80 total can prevent the disease from entering the unborn child.

Sunday evening was an ecuminical celebration for Chickasaw churches. A welcome was given by Pastor Younce of the First Baptist and Pastor Steve Warren delivered the season message of Thanksgiving. After the service we all headed for the Parish Hall where a great abundance of food was served. While our team doen't ever get to experience the "thrill of victory" at these matches, this year was a little better than last place. On Tuesday the 15th The Czajkowskis and I went to New Orleans for the day. We had lunch at the famous Camellia Grill in the Garden District and topped it off with beignets and coffee at the Cafe Du Monde. On the way home, we stopped at the Hard Rock for dinner and sight seeing. Saturday night was Beethoven & Blue Jeans night at the Saenger for the
Mobile Symphony. After Richard Strauss and Chris Theofanadis in the first half,
Awadagin Pratt was featured on the Steinway performing Ludwig Van Beethovens Concerto Number 5. He was called back for 5 encores for which he honored us with 3 more works. A truly great night.

This morning my friend Charles Czajkowski and I stopped and had a Turkey dinner lunch at the Chickasaw Methodist Church. From there we hit the Pecan Festival held on the grounds of an elementary School in Tillmans Corner. Lots of pecan candy, jewelry, carnival rides and model trains on display (the latter courtesy of Southwest Alabama Railroad Modelers (my train club) Met5 or 6 members and picked up a Pecan Festival Tee Shirt for my bride.

Yesterday the Kiwanis met for lunch and our featured speaker was Tom Ray, (the only man in Chickasaw with two first names) Tom spoke about the need for park benches and equipment for Legg Park in the East Village. He has raised, on his own, over $950. in contributions to assist this in happening,

but needs at least $1500. to assure they are able to fix the water fountain.

We will vote on supplying a contribution at the next Kiwanis business meeting.

The Chamber Of Commerce met this morning sponsored by the Chickasaw Kiwanis Club with speaker David Beasley. David spoke about one of the prevalent diseases in third world nations: prenatal tetanus. When a mother-

to-be becomes exposed during her pregnancy, it is almost a certainty that her child will die some 7-14 days after birth in severe pain from lung infection.
Project "Eliminate" has been formed to fight this problem, but it is necessary to innoculate 6-1/2 million women at a cost of $1.80 per shot. That is a total
of over $1,170,000.00 and the Kiwanis hope to raise that amount over the next 8 months. Please consider a donation to the Kiwanis. Picture is David

I was asked to give an address recommending the joining of those two organizations and we had two applications for the Knights and one for the Ladies Auxiliary. Today's Kiwanis meeting featured Fire Chief: Charlie Lyons speaking about why Chickasaw has fire-bans in the city, including the month of October. There

is currently a smouldering fire going on over on the east side of Hwy. 43 around the area of the settling pond. November 1, that ban will be lifted, assuming you contact the Fire Dept. for a permit. He highly recommended we

affix a ground wire (a lightning arrestor) to our homes to prevent damage from electrical storms.

Spent the weekend in Columbia, Tennessee where I am on the board of alumni for Columbia Military Academy, my high school from the 50's. We discussed where we would choose to hold the 2012 Reunion and it came down to The Marriott or one of the large resort centers in Nashville. Either way, everyone will enjoy the camaraderie there.

Sunday Afternoon, after the 11:00 AM Mass, St. Thomas Church had its Fall Picnic, on the grounds of the church and school. It was well attended and the crew managed to finish off 120 pounds of chicken as well as many home-made vegetable, salads and desserts brought by members of the Parish. There were

prizes, "split the pot" and games and popcorn for the kids.

Tonight was opening night for the Mobile Symphony at the Saenger Theatre.

The first selection was Wagners Lohengrin, followed by Phillip Glass Violin Concerto featuring Bella Hristova (pictured). After the intermission, dances by Rochmaninoff were played by the prolific orchestra. A after-party was thrown for season ticket subscribers at the conclusion of the program in the adjacent building.

The Kiwanis met today at the Civic Center with featured speaker, Judge Don Davis. Judge Don gave us a prepared pictorial explanation of his area of county responsibility including will and estate settlement, eminent domain, conservatorial assignments and voting within the county. Probate even appoints Notary Publics. Quite an interesting presentation.

Today at 1:30PM the Chickasaw Port Consortium met at Southern Ionics to discuss the Norfolk Southern Railroad, the Local Emergency Planning Committee and the water-main that was severed yesterday while work was being done to Mike Box bridge. We will tentatively meet again Oct. 20, 2011.

Tuesday we had a Chickasaw Garden Club meeting where the program was on roses and we continued our disscussion on a "Welcome To Chickasaw" sign at Wm. Brooks Park. After our Knights meeting this morning, we invited Sharon Cooper, wife of our departed brother Jim Cooper, and her friends along with the Ladies Auxiliary to

attend a prayer for blessing by our Chaplin, Jim Bullock. The prayer was before we unveiled the brass plaque on the door inscribed: "The James A. Cooper Room" dedicated to his faithful work as a Knight and his service as a Saraland Policeman.

Last night I was invited to be a Facilitator for a group who hopes to build a Mobile Arts Teaching and Performance Center (Legacy 166) It seeks to assemble and utilize an ambitious crew of designers and experts which will put together a Leeds "Green" building to educate and promote art, drama, lighting, dance, audio, video and recording for young people offering them the chance to obtain a degree in those fields. I participated in underlining the equipment and acoustics necessary to help determine the process.

Ar Kiwanis today Cathy Couey thanked the Club for our donations for the Recreational programs offered by the City especially the Girls Softball League.

Our speaker today was Ray Collins a friend of Ervins and a Mobile boy . Ray said he was so rural that he was born in his grandmothers house. He attended Barton Academy in 1043 and later Murphy High Scool. When he joined the Navy at age 17, he was determined to take advantage of the Governments offer to provide education, He was stationed in Virginia, Pensacola and Jacksonville and stayed in during the Korean Conflict. He continued his education in Jacksonville and in Memphis TN. His wife of 51 years passed away about a year ago and this gentleman has convinced our club that he is a true patriot.

Today the Kiwanis presented their quarterly award for outstanding police officer. Chief Mike Reynolds and President Ervin Daily gave the award to Officer Tommy McDuffie for his thorough and excellent work in catching several juveniles who were breaking in homes on 1th and 12th Avenues and delivering the loot to a Prichard accomplice. The entire group was foiled and sent to prison. Great job, Officer McDuffie.

We were treated to having ArchBishop Thomas Rodi give the homily this morning. He complimented our priest, Fr. Saucier, but only after jabbing him about the horrible color of the flowers at St Bridgets church. He said they were purple and gold (that's the LSU colors), where Fr. Saucier went to college.

After Mass we grabbed breakfast at the Huddle House and deb went to get her hair done.

Thurday night we attended the Municipal Association meeting in Citronelle where their new Police Chief spoke. Today was the joint chamber meeting with Saraland at the J.C. Davis auditorium. It was catered by Catfish Junction and the speaker was Rep. Randy Davis who spoke about the financial problems which have plagued the Southern States including Alabama. The School system has maxed out it's $600,000 "rainy-day" fund and maxed out $400,000 more. Randy is pushing a bill which should help out with the reluctance of insurance companies to cover wind damage during hurricanes and tropical storms. And here I am at Tanners, buying a gift for my daughter in Atlanta who dearly loves chocolate covered pecans. We were shopping at Tiny Town for our Grandaughter and having a bit of lunch at Quiznos. At todays Kiwanis meeting, Ervin and Cecilia Ann talked about the 93rd District Convention at Andulusia, Alabama. Awards were presented to Carnes Craig and George Givens, who did not attend. There are 117 clubs in Alabama with over 4,270 members. The Kiwanis reading program, RIF (Reading is fundamental) lost over $190,000 last year and we need to turn that around. New members in our club are Marilyn Jones and Bill Heard. Welcome to both of them.

After church and a St Vincent de Paul meeting, we welcomed and old friend from Atlanta who has now moved to Pensacola, FL. Virginia Moody was here taking a class and we all went out to eat at Felix this evening. Softshell crab, barbeque shrimp and white fish made us full and happy tonight.

As Deborahs vacation draws to a close, we decided to eat out and take in a movie this evening. We chose to see The Help, since Deb had just finished the book. I wasn't sure I would like it, but it was quite enjoyable and a rather emotional story line. I would recommend it to anyone born before 1955.

This morning we met the Seniors from St. Thomas Church and went to Wind Creek Casino in Atmore, AL. While Deborah doesn't actually qualify as a senior yet, she came as my guest. The management treated us all to lunch and of course got it all back with us feeding the slots. We had lunch with a fellow knight, Jack Kilpatrick and his lovely wife Evelyn who is in the Ladies Auxiliary with Deb. They are pictured waiting at valet service for our ride.

Yesterday, Deb and I went with Margaret and Charles Czajkowski to Fairhope to have lunch at the Wharf Restaurant on the Bay. Delicious gumbo and shrimp sandwiches were in order. We shopped at some of the stores, including the Antique Store and the bakery then bid that pleasant town adieu.

Monday was Kiwanis lunch at the Civic Center. Our president brought in some ideas for awards for the next race, including some plates, one with the liberty bell and one with the American Eagle. We will be delivering school supplies to Andalusia next week for the kids. Our member and esteemed Chief Of Police, Mike Reynolds brought in and introduced four new police personnel, pictured above in the second shot. They are Robert "Railroad" Smith, Janet Riva, Sharon Dennis and James Moore. Of course the two in back are Mike Reynolds and Ervin Dailey. Yesterday was also my lovely wifes birthday.

After a day of paperwork for me and money counting for Deborah, we decided to eat out tonight. (And also because I didn't make it to the grocery store today) We are planning a vacation but haven't confirmed reservations yet.

Tuesday evening the Commercial Board met approving a new restaurant up at Yesterdays, and a chopper (motorcycle manufacturer) shop at the old tax preparer place on Grand Blvd. Hope they both bring successful establishments to Chickasaw.

Today was Chickasaw Garden Club and both Deb and I attended. The speaker today was Ross Naze who discussed the placement of a new sign in Brooks Parkand the removal of the temporary Porta-Johns.Kathryn Johns provided the prizes and food which everyone enjoyed We will try to get estimates on putting in the sign in the Park.

Moday and we met at the Civic Center for lunch. Our treasurer, Jim Trout anounced that we have $3,800. in our General Fund and over $3900. in our project fund. We presented the highly coveted George F Hixson Award to Jim Trout for his many years of service and project participation over the years.

The club has requested that the money donated to his award go toward the new Eliminate project being subsidized by Kiwanis International. The second picture shows the medal also awarded.

Today after mass I stayed and helped sign up folks to have their family picture made for the new Church Directory. After that I had lunch and coffee at Serda downtown. Talked with several people from the church alter about activities coming up. A covey of Ladies went to Little Flower church this afternoon to play Bingo. I'll hang out at home and maybe slip over to Walmart for prescriptions later.

What could could possibly be better on a Saturday than to go to Callahans Irish Pub for a few brews? That's is where the Debster and I showed up after the rain to partake of a few Yeunglengs lagers. There wa a block party in the street, so parking was at a premium. Same thirsty bunch expressing their collective desire for alcoholic satisfaction. We stayed for the sandwiches and spoke to a few acquaintances.

Last night Deb and I attended the Municipal Association meeting and dinner at Prichard City Auditorium, which was catered by AJ's Rib Shack. Good company and address from Russell Wimberly from The SARPC. There were four of us from Chickasaw and Deb won one of the door prizes (A Hummingbird Feeder)

July 21, 2011 Chamber Of Commerce meeting featured President Terri Pringle presenting the engraved plaque for Citizen Of The Year to Stephanie Stewart and welcoming new member Technico. Lunch was sponsored and catered by members: Eloise Clubbs and Lori Hammond. The Business Of The month went to Cheryl McCormick Hann of Edward Jones Investments. Our main speaker was Jennifer Jenkins who talked about marketing your company through Social Networks such as Facebook. Terri reiterated the challange for the Chickasaw Council to consider making Chickasaw a "smoke -free community" Ervin Dailey asked for volunteers to furnish turkeys for the upcoming holidays through the Salvation Army. Door prizes were issued and the meeting was adjourned until August 18 at the J. C. Davis auditorium where we meet jointly with Saraland.

Wednesday the 20th was Senior Lunch at the church. We had a guest speaker, Mike Box, who discussed the importance of having a Will and making sure it was not complicated or confusing. Every will should have an executor to ascertain that bills are paid and define a clear inheritance. If a will leaves a significant amount of property, the will should be probated by law within 12 to 18 months.Father Saucier was in attendance and a thank you letter was read from him for his tenth anniversary ordination party and gift from the Knights, Seniors and Ladies Auxiliary.

The Chickasaw Garden Club took the Senior Bus to Fairhope today to visit the Town's Rose Garden down at the wharf. There were beautiful specimens and we found out that pretty girls get their pictures taken among the roses. It was then time for a good lunch before doing some shopping and heading back to the Civic Center.

Today Mary Brown a tour advisor, part of our friend Horace Allens program for July Kiwanis, spoke to us about arranging vacation tours. Late this afternoon, the MCREC Mobile County Republican Executive Committee welcomed Lt. Governor, Kaye Ivey to a photo op and speaking engagement in the Skyview Lounge of the Holiday Inn Downtown. The group later met in Ballroom C for our regular meeting and discussed the Young Republican convention which will be held in Mobile in 2013.There were several Chickasaw People at the meeting including Adam Bourne and Charles Larimore.

After church this morning we went to Providence Hospital to see Horrace Allen who has been there a week with colonic bleeding. He seemed in pretty good spitits as he ate a bowl of okra. Bonnie was there taking good care of him so we wished them well and gave them get well regards from the Kiwanis. On the way back we stopped for lunch at Macaroni Grill and enjoyed some of their wonderful grilled salmon. It was extremely hot most of the day, so we have been at home, inside, relaxing with the AC.

Friday night and it's the Loda Art Walk down at the Dauphin St. Arts
Council. Deb and I stopped of at our usual watering hole for a glass of Cabernet. We saw Green Suttles and his wife Paige and then visited the council to say hello to Charlie Smoke and check out some of the Battleship
Photos and Paintings. We then hit Serda for some coffee and a sandwich. Nice humid evening.

Last night we attended and worked at the July 4th Chickasaw Independence Day celebration. I helped some of my other Kiwanis members undertake the sale of hamburgers and hotdogs for the clubs charitable

benefit for children. The band "Bama Nights" were excellent and the fireworks were introduced a few minute early due to inclement weather approaching. Chickasaw's mayor, Byron Pittman also introduced his daughter, who sang the Star Spangled Banner. The pictures are the fireworks, serving free watermelon and the band.

My daughters family left this morning to go home, but not before we showed them one of the crown jewels of Chickasaw: The Huddle House. We munched a little brunch and then it was time for them to hit the highway. Tonight I have a date with Kiwanis destiny; serving hamburgers and hotdogs at the annual fireworks extravaganza.

After a 5 AM rise time to get ready for our Knights Indoctrination of Officers and the 7 AM Mass, we held our doughnuts and breakfast meeting. Several of us drove over to Neil Andrews home for a pool party and lunch while our daughter and son in law took our grand daughter to the beach. They spent about five hours there building sand castles and jumping waves.

This afternoon the Knights had pick-up-day for the 4th meat sales and the event turned out well. Tonight several of our friends showed up for dinner and our daughter and her husband brought our grand daughter for the

Less than 24 hours ago, I received a call from Mary Lou and Frank Coate who had discovered that today is Father Sauciers tenth anniversary as a
priest. It was suggested that we take him out to dinner tonight and the idea was to alert the Knights, Ladies Aux. and the Seniors of the event, It was like a "perfect" situation, however, since Charles Czajkowski and I had purchased him a tool set to replace the one stolen from him two weeks ago. So we presented it tonight from the three groups, had a bakery make up an anniversary cake AND managed to round up over 75 persons to join him for his surprise party at Catfish Junction.

Today I spent the morning in my office ordering CD recorders for a client, then progressed to the back yard where I pressure-washed the patio and lawn furniture. Just about wore my tired old a-- out. But Deborah called and as the head cashier for Dillards, had achieved a "perfect" audit when the home office gave her department a surprise visit. Of course that called for "dinner-out" and she insisted on taking my picture for the occasion. Still trying to figure out why her great work warranted taking MY picture, but she said her hair was frizzy from the rain.

Last June Kiwanis meeting and we conducted business as well as presenting speakers. We voted to provide $200. for fireworks for the 4th celebration and to give Pastor Dennis Brown $200 to help move a piano to Costa Rico for an orphanage. Our speaker this morning was Cecilia Ann Dailey who gave us some information about the Library including their access to Ancestry. com and reading programs going on during the summer. She and her husband Ervin spoke about their recent trip to Ireland, Kenya, Tanzania and Egypt.

I almost forgot to mention that last night a friend and I stopped by Callahans Irish Pub for a frothy one and to see Phil and Walt, a regular duo

at the bar. They are a good acoustic guitar act that plays everyone's favorite songs and gets all in a happy mood. Our waitress had a great sense of humor and kept us laughing during the evening. I really like that bar. . .it reminds me of a place in Atlanta called Manuel's Tavern.

Saturday at the VFW Hall, right above Burger King in Saraland was Heavy Metal "Make A Scene" Day. For $7. you could show up at noon and listen until your ears bled profusely. I'm not saying the groups were anything other than professional, but several of them reminded me of when I owned Nova Studios in Atlanta and would leave after a 3 to 4 hour session in the afternoon or night and my ears would "ring" for a couple of hours due to
the loud volume. I finally said goodnight when "Pseudo Nein" finished, unable to hear my car radio on the way home. I'm pleased that Saraland does offer soething other than Lawrence Welk or Rap.

Tonight was the Seniors "Western Dance" at the Sullivan Center. Everyone brought food to share and their wine, beer or soft drinks depending on your party criteria. There was slow dancing, line dancing and some serious fifties "shag". Father Saucier and the puppies joined us for some fun. The reason the second picture is so dark is after they turned off the ceiling lights to set the mood.

Corresponded with the mayor and councilman this morning about the 4th of July fireworks. I am told it's a GO. This afternoon I called our code inspector about the dead tree on city property behind our church. It has already dropped two large limbs onto the Quanset Hut and storage building, but the damage is minimal. I was told that the city is waiting on a bid to take it down. Then there was coffee at the Huddle House.

After working yesterday in the church, I am taking a day off today to work around the house. Last night we joined the Czajkowski's for dinner at Zaxby's and today I had a couple of people come by the house to order hams and a Boston butt from the Knights for the 4th. Speaking of Independence day, I will be working with the Kiwanis selling hamburgers and sausage dogs. I just hope we continue to have rain so we can have the fireworks show. at Brooks Park.

At Kiwanis today, we welcomed Lovina Koch, a retired CPA and Lt. Governor of District 14 Kiwanis Foundation. Lovina discussed the advantages of using the foundation to process our fund-raisers because of its 501-C3 status and the grants available to benefit children. Of course every Kiwanian knows our motto is "Children First, Priority One". We are quite active in the RIF (Reading is Fundamental) program and we voted to up our annual donation for that cause from $300. to $500. We are then sent numerous books which we read to the children and then give them the book to take home.

What a great Fathers Day! All my kids called and my sweet wife took me for brunch to the Trellis Room at the Battle House Hotel. In addition to the champagne cocktails, they served wonderful crabcakes and fillet and shrimp that melted in your mouth. Thank God for the strong coffee afterward or I would have dozed off at dessert.

Saturday Deb works the later half of the day so we had the first part to ouselves. We watered plants, cleaned fan blades and she did a load of clothes. Being in the mood for a great hamburger, we visited Butch Cassidy's on Florida St. They make some of the best onion rings you've ever tasted. This afternoon I will work on Knights Of Columbus material for our next meeting.

Last night Deb and I were at the Municipal Meeting downtown at Government Plaza to hear Charlie Henry, the new Mobile director of the NOAA Gulf Of Mexico Center. We had our second dinner served by Catfish Junction in one day. Today I worked over at St. Thomas Church, sound proofing some small rooms for privacy. When I returned home I received some wonderful phone calls from friends who had attended the Chamber Meeting yesterday.

The Chickasaw Chamber's "Citizen Of The Year" was held today at the First Baptist Church. I was honored to be a nominee, but the final award went to Stephanie Stewart, a caring and hard working employee of the city. The caterer was Catfish Junction and Terry Pringle, our president and Terry Ellis, our speaker did a fine job. Mayor Pittman welcomed the crowd and Representative Randy Davis was in attendance. This morning Mayor Pittman, Chief Reynolds and I went downtown to South Broad Street to talk to Fred and Rose Pollman about opening a bakery in Chickasaw. They are willing to meet with us to discuss a good location. Later in the evening, Frank Coate and I attended the conferring of the 1st degree for the Knights Of Columbus on six candidates. It is a solemn and impressive ceremony. Two of the fellows are from our council.

Charles and Margaret Czajkowski swung by and picked me up this morning to go see J.D. Crowe (Mobile Press cartoonist) at the Daphne/Spanish Fort Chamber Of Commerce meeting, held at the causeway Oyster House. Mr. Crowe is an amusing speaker, making fun of everyone from Herman Thomas to Steve Nodine. At the end of the meeting he answered questions and signed an autograph for Margaret's framed cartoon about Chickasaw's one and only gambling day.
